This is a server built by TailoredPC for a small law firm using the fastest and newest technologies available at the time it was built.  It holds the firm's files and data in a central location and also operates the firm's email and allows remote access for employees out of the office using remote desktop, remote web workplace, FTP over SSL, and virtual private networking.  The components are:
  • TWO AMD Opteron 252 64-bit processors running at 2.6GHz with 90nm technology (Troy core) and 1000MHz HyperTransport
  • 2GB (4x512MB) of OCZ Enchanced Latency PC3200 registered ECC RAM - 1GB of RAM for each processor and upgradeable to a total of 16MB
  • Tyan Thunder K8WE motherboard with an NForce4 Professional chipset, dual gigabit LAN, and PCI-Express
  • Four 74GB Western Digital 10,000RPM SATA Raptor hard drives with 8MB cache running in RAID 5 configuration
  • One 160GB Western Digital 7,200RPM SATA hard drive with 8MB cache
  • Highpoint PCI-X RAID card
  • PC Power & Cooling 510W EPS 12V power supply
  • Sapphire ATI X300SE PCI-Express graphics card with 128MB RAM
  • NEC 16X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW
  • Sony floppy drive
  • 2 92mm Vantec Stealth Case fans in front of the hard drives and 2 120mmx15mm Delta fans behind the hard drives for cooling
  • 1 120mmx38mm Delta fan for exhaust
  • 2 hard drive cooler face-plates with 6 40mm fans for extra fresh air intake for the power supply
  • Microsoft Internet keyboard and optical mouse
  • Altec Lansing speakers
  • TailoredPC custom fan failure alarm, intrusion alarm, and RAID activity indicator
  • Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003, including Exchange Server 2003
  • Acronis True Image Server 8.0
  • Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 9.0

Many of these components, such as a DVD+/-RW and an antivirus solution, are not even offered for server systems from other so-called custom computer retailers.

The system is housed in a black Chenbro pedestal server case that can be converted into a rackmount case with a simple kit.  The five hard drives provide the utmost secure server system that is also easy to use and completely automated.  The 4 high speed Raptor hard drives hold the Windows Small Business Server 2003 operating system and other server software in one partition with a second partition holding the company's data files.  The 4 drives are in RAID 5, which provides plenty of storage space and speed as well as redundancy in the event one hard drive fails.

The system is backed up by Acronis True Image Server twice a month and the data files are backed up daily, weekly, and monthly.  The backups are held in individual files on the 160GB SATA hard drive, replacing the need for a tape drive or an employee having to remember to change the tape every day.  Of course, for even more security, backups can be written to DVDs and kept separately from the server itself.  The backup software even has the capability of automatically writing backup images to DVDs itself. Competitors do not even offer such automated backup systems, limiting customers choices to expensive tape drives that rely upon changing tapes every day to maintain any effective back-up system.

TailoredPC performed additional configuration for the firm that typically cannot be obtained from leading competitors.  TailoredPC configured the entire server, including the Exchange Server, Outlook Web Access, design and configuration of the internal website, common security configurations, group policies, remote access, receiving remote automated backups of the firm's website from its web host over SSH, and full backup scheduling and configuration, including automated brick-level backups of each user's Outlook information.  TailoredPC also configured the firm's router to work with email, VPN, SSH, FTP over SSL, and other necessary protocols while maintaining a secure firewall.  When the firm received the server, it only had to hook it up and turn it on -- it was completely ready with no customer configuration whatsoever.

At the time, including full configuration of email, internal websites, and network security as well as a system restore image, this system sold for:

$6164.47*

*This system was sold as part of a larger project, which included routers, switches, and network cabling.  The price reflects the cost of the server parts and an estimate of labor attributable to server assembly and configuration, but not including router and firewall configuration.
